Why the annual Spicemas Festival is a must-do for Grenada visitors

Spicemas Festival, Grenada’s premier cultural celebration, is set to take place Aug. 1 – 13, offering a vibrant showcase of the island’s rich heritage.

This year’s festival promises an array of captivating events, each highlighting different aspects of Grenadian culture.

One of the most anticipated events is J’ouvert, on Aug. 12. This lively street party begins before dawn and continues until sunrise, featuring music from steel drums, calypso, soca and reggae. Participants revel in the tradition by covering themselves in oil, paint, or mud, with Jab-Jab bands adding a thrilling element as they parade through the town.

Fancy Mas, scheduled for Aug. 13, is another highlight, featuring participants in elaborate costumes adorned with beads, feathers, and dazzling embellishments. Traditional Mas players add a historical touch, bringing characters to life through authentic cultural performances.

Additional key events include the Children’s Carnival Frolic on Aug. 3, the Soca Monarch competition on Aug. 9 and the Panorama steel band competition on Aug. 10.

Each of these events draws large crowds eager to experience Grenada’s infectious rhythms and energetic performances.

The Grenada Tourism Authority is inviting Canadian travellers to join in Spicemas 2024. “Immerse yourself in the colours, music, and traditions that make Grenada’s carnival an unforgettable experience!” says the GTA.
