WestJet cancels some 40 flights in anticipation of mechanics strike

WestJet launches Fredericton-Calgary and Halifax-Edinburgh service

CALGARY — It was a busy week for the WestJet Group, which celebrated its return to Fredericton and inaugurated new service between Halifax and Edinburgh.

FREDERICTON — CALGARY

Nonstop service between Fredericton and Calgary has begun following the departure of flight WS315 on June 20. The flight is scheduled to operate twice per week throughout the summer and fall, from June 20 to Oct. 24, 2024.

“Over the next four months, we anticipate WestJet will bring thousands of guests to the Fredericton region via our global hub in Calgary. We understand the impact these flights bring to the community and appreciate today’s support and excitement surrounding this critical route,” said John Weatherill, WestJet Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer. “As we inaugurate our 12th direct link between Atlantic Canada and Western Canada, we are building on the momentum of strong leisure and business demand and look forward to continuing to celebrate the route’s success.”

From Atlantic Canada this summer, WestJet has grown its overall seat capacity by 71% compared to last summer, with 149 peak weekly departures. Including the addition of seasonal service between Fredericton and Calgary, the airline’s domestic seat growth in Atlantic Canada will grow by 50% alone.

HALIFAX — EDINBURGH

Also taking off on June 20 was WestJet’s inaugural service between Halifax and Edinburgh, which followed the return of nonstop service between Halifax and Dublin on June 19.

WestJet’s summer transatlantic capacity from Halifax includes the following:

  • Halifax-Edinburgh, 3x/weekly, June 20-Oct. 13, departing 10:35 p.m., arriving 8:10 a.m.
  • Edinburgh-Halifax, 3x/weekly, June 21-Oct. 13, departing 9:35 a.m., arriving 11:41 a.m.
  • Halifax-Dublin, 4x/weekly, June 19-Oct. 13, departing 10:30 p.m., arriving 7:55 a.m.
  • Dublin-Halifax, 4x/weekly, June 20-Oct. 14, departing 9:30 a.m., arriving 11:38 a.m.
  • Halifax-London (Gatwick), 4x/weekly, April 28-Oct. 25, departing 11:00 p.m., arriving 9:00 a.m.
  • London (Gatwick)-Halifax, 4x/weekly, April 29-Oct. 26, departing 11:00 a.m., arriving 1:46 p.m.
