CALGARY — Step aside Richard Branson – you too, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. Your space games ain’t the only ones in town now that WestJet is heading out of this world.
In a new video launched today, April 1, the airline announced new affordable flights to space onboard WestJet-X. While fares on competing flights aboard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, Musk’s SpaceX and Bezos’ Blue Origin start at a staggering $1 million, a one-way ticket with WestJet-X is priced at a measly $500,000.
“We believe it shouldn’t cost as much as 50 electric cars to experience the cosmos. With options like aisle seats and one-way tickets, we’ve cut the cost of spaceflight in half,” says WestJet.
It’s unclear at this time whether the airline will be offering roundtrip fares, or if passengers will be able to return to Earth at all.
According to an official countdown on WestJet’s website, the inaugural flight to space will take place May 2. Reduced airfare applies to bookings made by April 4, 2022, for travel between April 20 to Oct. 31, 2022. WestJet Vacations is also offering reduced packages that include hotel and flights.
To ensure a comfortable ride, WestJet’s aerodynamically-designed spacecraft features pressurized cabins for breathability, on-demand inflight entertainment featuring ‘Planet of the Apes,’ complimentary soft drinks and pretzels, plus Wi-Fi “so you can TikTok from space.”
WestJet also took a jab at competitors’ phallic-shaped rocket ships, promising passengers that a ride aboard its state-of-the-art spacecraft will be embarrassment-free.
