“Vienna fits everyone”: New hotels, Johann Strauss 2025 and more on the horizon

TORONTO — Vienna, Austria and all its charms were on full display at a trade event in Toronto last night.

Hosted by Armando Mendonca, President of AMpm Canada, representative of the Vienna Tourist Board on Sept. 10 at the Chelsea Hotel, the event highlighted the city’s fascinating heritage, world-renowned music scene, artistic landmarks and unique culture that art lovers and history buffs find irresistible. And with direct flights from Montreal and Toronto with Air Canada and Austrian Airlines, this central European gem is now more accessible than ever for Canadian travellers.

“Vienna fits everyone. It is unique with its imperial heritage, artistic prowess, and world-class music scene. It’s an experience in every sense of the word,” said Elke Bachner, Market Manager, Canada for the Vienna Tourist Board.

ARTS & CULTURE

Vienna’s imperial past is evident at every corner, from the grandeur of Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs, to the opulent architecture that dots the famous Ringstrasse.

Often referred to as the City of Music, Vienna was home to legendary composers like Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss. It hosts concerts and operas nearly every night.

Next year, 2025, marks the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II’s birth, and the city is planning a year-long celebration in his honour, with festivals, concerts, and special exhibitions at his former house, museum and even his favourite restaurants. Major Viennese orchestras will be involved, as well as artists and performers from all genres. All of Vienna’s key music institutions are taking part, including the Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, MusikTheater an der Wien, Volksoper Wien and Vienna State Opera. Strauss will also feature in some surprising places – both indoors and outdoors – in all 23 of the city’s districts in 2025, from the Central Cemetery to the Danube Island Festival. Several exhibitions will also take place, including ‘Celebrating Johanna Strauss’ at the Theatermusuem from Dec. 4, 2024 to June 23, 2025.

Art enthusiasts will also find a haven in Vienna. The Kunsthistorisches Museum houses works by the Old Masters, including Rembrandt and Bruegel. And for those who wish to experience Vienna’s thriving contemporary art scene, the MuseumsQuartier is home to several modern galleries. Many museums have accessible art and cultural offerings, including wheelchair-accessible design and equipment, information in sign language, alternatives for visually impaired and blind visitors, and texts in simple language.

A GREEN, LIVEABLE CITY

But Vienna isn’t just about high culture; it’s also a city that knows how to enjoy life. With over 990 parks, including the famous Prater where visitors can ride the giant ferris wheel, and the nearby vineyards that offer a refreshing escape from city life, Vienna embodies the good life. As Bachner puts it, “Vienna knows how to invite people to be tolerant, open-minded, and to love art and culture.”

For the fifth consecutive year, Vienna has been named the “Most Livable City” by international organizations. And it’s no surprise: the city boasts clean air, thanks in part to its pure Viennese water sourced from nearby mountain springs. Over 53% of the city’s surface is green space, making it a true green metropolis. Excellent public transport, reliable governance and a top-tier healthcare system also contribute to its world-class reputation.

Easily navigable, the city centre can be reached via a 16-minute train ride from Vienna International Airport (Jenna Airport). Once in the centre, visitors can make use of the Vienna City Card, which offers unlimited public transport and discounts at many of the city’s top attractions. Whether they opt for the 24-hour, 48-hour, or 7-day card, all announcements are made in English, ensuring a seamless experience for international visitors.

UNMISSABLE EXPERIENCES

Vienna’s winter season transforms the city into a magical wonderland, with festive Christmas markets filling the air with the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. From mid-November through December, clients can explore market stalls selling handcrafted gifts and enjoy live choir performances throughout the city.

For music lovers, Vienna offers a variety of genres beyond classical. The city is home to thriving opera houses, jazz clubs and even raves, providing entertainment for all tastes.

No trip to Vienna is complete without visiting the vineyards that surround the city. Vienna is the only capital city in the world with extensive vineyards within its borders, making it possible to enjoy world-class wine just a short tram ride from the city centre.

“Vienna is an experience where you’re just 20 minutes away from sitting in a vineyard overlooking the Danube,” Bachner notes.

NEW HOTEL OPENINGS

Vienna’s hospitality scene continues to grow, with several exciting new hotels opening their doors. For luxury seekers, the Amauris and Anantara Palace Hansen offer elegance near Vienna’s famous Ringstrasse. Travellers looking for a boutique experience can check into 011 Boutique Hotel, while those seeking a more relaxed, hip atmosphere will love The Hoxton. For guests preferring globally recognized luxury, the new Mandarin Oriental will be opening in 2025, promising unparalleled comfort in the heart of the city.

Opened this past May is Marriott International’s Imperial Riding School, named for its origins as a 19th-century military equestrian school. Part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection (the first in Autograph Collection hotel in Austria), the hotel offers 342 rooms, restaurants, a wellness area, garden and meetings and event space that can accommodate up to 375 guests.

Also brand new is the Hampton by Hilton Vienna City West, which opened its doors in August with 355 rooms, marking largest Hampton by Hilton hotel in Europe. The Hotel Schani UNO City celebrated its grand opening in June 2024 opposite the Vienna International Center, with 202 rooms featuring infrared movement detectors that reduce energy consumption.
