ORLANDO, Fla. — One of Orlando’s longest-running attractions is set to close its doors next year.

Universal Orlando Resort announced Wednesday that it is closing its Wet ‘n Wild water park on Dec. 31, 2016. According to a statement on Universal’s official blog, the move is being done in advance of the opening Universal’s new water theme park — Volcano Bay — which has already broken ground. It is set to open sometime in 2017.

Wet ‘n Wild was one of the country’s first water parks when it opened in 1977. It was acquired by Universal in 1998.

According to a report by the Themed Entertainment Association, Wet ‘n Wild ranked fourth among the Top 20 water parks in North America, bringing in nearly 1.3 million visitors in 2014.
