ALEXANDRIA, VA — Who better than travel agents to determine the world’s top honeymoon destinations?

Vacation, an online travel advice planning resource powered by Travel Leaders Group, recently conducted a survey of nearly 150 travel agents who specialize in honeymoon and destination weddings. The results ranked the top six destinations for newlyweds, with the majority being island locales.

Here are the results:

• St Lucia: Known for its luxury resorts, beaches and the majestic Pitons, it’s no surprise that this island in the Eastern Caribbean has come out on top. Travel agents surveyed recommend that couples go scuba diving, take a catamaran tour, hike up the Pitons, relax with a mud bath at the Sulphur Springs, and book a cocoa plantation tour at Hotel Chocolat, where couples can make their own chocolate bar as a souvenir of their recent nuptials.
• Jamaica: To recommendations for newlyweds on this laidback island include an excursion to Blue Hole in Ocho Rios, a horseback ride in the ocean, and a romantic sea salt and hot stone couple’s massage.
• Bora Bora and Tahitian Islands: Overwater bungalows have put these islands top of mind among newlyweds. “A stay in a Tahitian overwater bungalow is much imitated, but never equaled in design and opulence,” said Connecticut-based travel agent Eric Ardolino. “Each bungalow has its own staircase right into the ocean and your dining room table inside has a glass top that looks into the water, so you can watch the fish below!”
• Riviera Maya, Mexico: A honeymoon in Riviera Maya lends more luxury treatment with a shorter travel time for a postnuptial getaway. Suggestions include a day trip inland along the Yucatan Peninsula to visit Chichén Itzá, a visit to Xcaret, the eco-archeological park, and ziplining at Xplor Park for more adventurous couples.
• Italy: For those who want to spend time on the beach, consider the Amalfi Coast. Couples who prefer culture and city life should consider Florence, where they can visit countless museums, participate in cooking classes or take day trips to local cities like Pisa.
• Hawaii: Every Hawaiian island has its own distinct flair and attractions. Maui offers luxury beachfront resorts and the epic Road to Hana trip.
