Sustainability & travel go hand in hand: German National Tourist Board and the Lufthansa Group

The German National Tourist Board’s global sustainability flagship campaign, ‘Simply FEEL GOOD’, builds on Germany’s international recognition as a sustainable travel destination.

“Since 2021, our award-winning ‘Feel Good’ campaign has effectively showcased the diversity of certified sustainable offerings in international markets,” says Petra Hedorfer, Chairwoman of the German National Tourist Board. “The 2023 campaign exemplifies how sustainability, enjoyment, and a rich tapestry of experiences can harmoniously blend in a journey to Germany.”

Simply FEEL GOOD 2023 serves as the centerpiece of the campaign, with a dedicated landing page at www.germany.travel. This hub is a goldmine of nearly 140 carefully curated sustainable travel ideas, selected through a competitive process. The travel ideas are organized into four clusters: ‘Discover’, ‘Enjoy’, ‘Stay’ and ‘On Tour’.

Interactive maps of Germany are linked to additional sustainable travel options on the thematic sites of the 16 federal states. Visitors can also explore accommodations that hold at least one of 17 recognized sustainability certifications.

THE LUFTHANSA GROUP’S SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Speaking of sustainability, the Lufthansa Group wants to be carbon-neutral by 2050. As part of that goal, the company is aiming to cut its net carbon emissions in half by 2030 compared to 2019.

Here’s how the Lufthansa Group is working to achieve those goals …

Modern fleet

The Lufthansa Group will put around 200 brand new, more sustainable aircraft into service by 2030. These reduce fuel consumption and thus CO2-emissions by up to 30% compared to their predecessors, on every flight.

Sustainable aviation fuel

The Lufthansa Group calls sustainable aviation fuel – i.e. fuel based on biogenic waste materials – a true alternative to fossil fuel, and key to the Lufthansa Group’s path to CO2-neutral aviation. Various production processes already exist today, and others the company is supporting in their development to bring to market.

The Lufthansa Group is investing millions of euros into sustainable aviation fuel. Already today, passengers can use sustainable aviation fuel to make their flight more sustainable.

Waste and plastic reduction

The Lufthansa Group is involved in all aspects of avoiding single-use plastic and the sustainable design of its airlines’ on-board products. To this end, experts continuously analyze and evaluate the products and processes by involving various actors in the value chain. In product development and service, the Lufthansa Group systematically follows the principles of ‘reduce – reuse – recycle – replace’.

When introducing new culinary concepts, the focus is on the consistent selection of food produced in a resource-saving manner and environmentally-friendly packaging materials. At Lufthansa, the offer is called ‘Onboard Delights’. A large proportion of the fresh products are packaged in PaperWise material, made from agricultural waste material and produced using 100% renewable energy and is therefore CO2 neutral. Plus, by producing the fresh products in a way that is more in line with the demand, less unused food has to be disposed.

By 2025, single-use plastic articles are to be replaced by sustainable materials. The Lufthansa Group is working with various companies in order to identify fitting sustainable product alternatives.

Here’s a look at Lufthansa Group’s schedule from Canada for winter 2023/24…
