LONDON – We’re all familiar with that scene from ‘Home Alone,’ when the entire McCallister family is seen making a mad dash through the airport to try to catch their flight in time. They all made it onboard, save for eight-year-old Kevin, of course, but had the movie occurred today, the family may not have been so lucky.
According to The Telegraph, Easyjet, Britain’s biggest budget airline, has introduced a new 30-minute cut-off point to prevent exactly what the McCallisters had done – rushing through security at the last minute to board their flight. The new rule means that anyone trying to pass through security barriers with less than half an hour to spare before take-off will be denied boarding the plane.
Gatwick airport will be updating its security barriers to single out last-minute travellers who’ve already missed the deadline at the moment they have their boarding passes scanned.
Anyone who’s rejected from boarding will have the option to pay £ 80 to switch their flight. Easyet also offers ‘missed flight cover’ at a price of £ 7.50, which must be purchased prior to travel and provides a full refund or travel on the next available flight.
“We are implementing this, based on a proven model at Heathrow’s Terminal 5, to eliminate unnecessary journeys for passengers who then need to be escorted landside. The vast majority of our passengers arrive as we suggest at the gate before -30 to board the aircraft,” said an Easyjet spokesman.
