RIU says thank you to Mexico for 25 years of partnership

ACAPULCO — RIU Hotels & Resorts is sending a big, heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the country of Mexico for hosting the brand for the past 25 years.

Since RIU inaugurated the Hotel Riu Yucatan in Playa del Carmen back in the summer of 1997, the brand has exponentially expanded its presence in Mexico with over 20 hotels in five Caribbean and Pacific states, 12,000 rooms and nearly 9,000 collaborators. Today, Mexico represents RIU’s main international destination, with almost 30% of its global talent being Mexican, compared to just 18% from Spain, where RIU originated.

The brand says it’s particularly indebted to Mexico for keeping its borders open throughout the pandemic, helped RIU to keep its hotels operating. It describes the destination as “the lungs that allowed the rest of the company to continue breathing during this time.”

While at Tianguis Turístico 2022 last month in Acapulco, Joan Trian Riu, Managing Director of RIU Hotels & Resorts, and Mexico’s Secretary of State for Tourism Miguel Torruco highlighted RIU’s many milestones that have taken place in Mexico these past 25 years. They also debuted a commemorative 25th anniversary video.

“RIU has learned so much about so many different areas during its time in Mexico, and this knowledge has had a profound impact on the company, which is now present in 20 countries,” says RIU Hotels & Resorts. “RIU has planned a long list of actions that will take place throughout the year to celebrate such an important anniversary. This will take place with guests, employees and partners on social networks, in the media or in hotels.”
