GREAT BLASKET ISLAND — If you think hot showers and Wi-Fi are overrated luxuries, then this job may be just for you.
Great Blasket Island in Ireland, the most westerly island in all of Europe, is looking for two people, ideally a couple or a pair of friends, to manage its lone coffee shop and accommodations.
Posted on its Facebook page on Jan. 8, the remote destination announced it’s looking for long-term help to manage three stone cottages for new arrivals and open its coffee shop each morning to serve tea and coffee to guests and day-trippers arriving by boat.
With no electricity on the island, however, the new caretakers will have to make do with a gas hob connected to gas canisters at the back of the shop. Hot water can then be made with a whistling kettle placed on top.

According to owner Alice Hayes, who spoke with RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland, ideal candidates must have good people skills and some level of fitness. They also need to be adaptable as “one hundred and one things can go wrong on the island.”
For anyone who absolutely cannot live without their phones, good news – the island does have one charging port that’s powered by a wind turbine. It generates enough energy to charge one device “so you’re not completely shut off from the mainland,” said Hayes.
Located off the coast of Dingle in County Kerry, Great Blasket has been largely uninhabited since its final residents left around 1953. It still, however, receives tourists in search of its abandoned settlements, its many hiking trails and gorgeous white sand beaches.
