MEXICO CITY — A strong earthquake has shaken eastern Mexico, but there are no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-6.3 quake was centred in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, about 260 miles (418 kilometres) east-southeast of Mexico City. The epicenter was relatively deep, 59 miles (95 kilometres) below the surface.

Local news media in Veracruz reported the 5:46 a.m. (6:46 a.m. EDT; 1046 GMT) quake was felt strongly there, and it rocked buildings at least as far away as Mexico City.
