ACTA launches COVID-19 portal, plus a message for TICO CEO

New blog post aims to help consumers understand protections from TICO vs. APPR

TORONTO — TICO has published a new blog post to help travellers understand the consumer protection offered by TICO, and through the federal Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR).

TICO says it will promote the blog post to help boost awareness and understanding, and encourages the industry to share with clients when possible.

The post notes that in Ontario, TICO offers protection for consumers who purchase their travel from more than 1,900 registered travel agencies, booking websites and tour operators located in the province. Meanwhile, the APPR provide protection for air travellers flying to, from or within Canada.

This blog post then goes on to compare the consumer protection provided by TICO and the APPR, highlighting their key features and differences.

TICO notes the key protections it offers, from regulation of travel agencies, booking websites and tour operators, to important info in the booking process, to complaint resolution, and the Compensation Fund. The blog offers detailed explanations of each of the four points.

TICO goes on to outline the APPR protections, including flight delays and cancellations, denied boarding, lost or damaged baggage, and tarmac delays.

“While both TICO and the APPR aim to protect consumers, they focus on different aspects of the travel experience,” says TICO in the post. “TICO provides protection for travellers who book through registered travel agencies, booking websites and tour operators in Ontario. In contrast, the APPR specifically addresses the rights of air passengers, outlining remedies and compensation related to flight delays, cancellations, baggage problems and other airline issues. For travellers, understanding the protections offered by both TICO and the APPR can enhance preparedness, allowing you to navigate possible disruptions with greater confidence and ease.”
