Mauna Lani debuts new recreation program featuring land & water activities

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection on the Island of Hawaii is encouraging all guests to get sporty with its new active pursuits program, ‘Kainalu Mauka to Makai Sports.

This innovative recreation program is unlike any other in Hawaii, says the resort, and draws inspiration from Hawaiians’ ancient relationship to the sea. ‘Kainalu’, the Hawaiian word for ocean wave, means learning to ride life’s waves and tides with “strength, grace and an appetite for fun.”

Guided by world-class athletes and developed by renowned waterman Todd Clark, the program includes an array of activities both on land (‘mauka’) and water (‘makai’).

Land experiences range from adrenaline-fuelled bike safaris to coastal hiking treks, meditation and performance breathing training. Through the Kainalu program guests gain exclusive access to Waimea’s historic Anna Ranch, a lush 100-acre property and former training grounds for King Kamehameha’s Kpu’u pu’u warriors. Guests can explore single-track trails via traditional mountain bikes or electric bikes, all the while discovering waterfalls, streams and ancient Hawaiian cultural sites.

Ocean activities include surfing, scuba diving, free diving and performance ocean swimming. Beginning and advanced paddlers can try prone or stand-up paddleboarding, or climb into a double-hull canoe for an educational excursion along the Kohala coast.

There’s plenty for the kids too, as the program offers an array of athletic pursuits designed to empower young minds. These include canoe adventures to tropical reefs, deep-sea snorkelling, junior waterman training and scenic cycling excursions.

Following a full day of adventure, guests can rest up and eat up at the Surf Shack, located just steps away from the ocean. Serving as an ideal starting point for excursions, the Shack features light cuisine and a curated selection of wines and beers on tap.

Mauna Lani is inviting travellers to be among the first to experience the reimagined property with the ‘mauna Lani Journeys’ offer, which includes a US$1,000 resort credit that can be applied to resort experiences, dining, spa and golf.
