Lone road to Grand Canyon’s North Rim reopens for season

JACOB LAKE, Ariz. — The lone road leading to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim has reopened.

State Route 67 from Jacob Lake regularly is closed over the winter season because of heavy snow. The state Department of Transportation doesn’t clear the snow because most facilities in the far northern stretches of the national park are closed during that time.

Motorists were welcomed back to the 40-mile winding road on Sunday.

The more popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon remains open year-round.

Hikers can make the 21-mile trek to the North Rim from the South Rim. The drive between the two is 215 miles.
