TORONTO — Next week Let’s Get Uncomfortable will kick off a 3-part series focusing on burnout in the travel industry.
‘Burnout: Confronting the Tourism Industry’s Mental Health Crisis’ is the latest series from LGU, the volunteer organization dedicated to addressing difficult topics in Canada’s travel industry.
The virtual, 3-part event series facilitated by LGU’s Shalene Dudley and Maria Ines will explore the challenges being faced by tourism professionals juggling the survival of their careers and the quality of their mental health, and how industry leaders can step up to help.
The first virtual event is scheduled for Tues. Oct. 11, 2022, from 10 – 11:30 a.m. ET. LGU’s Dudley will speak with Hassel Aviles, co-founder and executive director of hospitality non-profit global leader in mental health advocacy, Not 9 to 5, about the current structures of mental health support that exist within the tourism industry, where the gaps are, and how to go about filling them.
Two more events in the series will take place in fall 2022. During the second event, taking place in early November (TBD), LGU’s Maria Ines will speak with three tourism professionals about their personal experiences navigating mental health challenges as professionals within the tourism industry. This will be in an effort to raise awareness around and normalize the way mental illness manifests within our sector.
And the third event (TBD) will feature Dudley speaking with an expert in the mental health field about practical ways in which professionals can manage their own wellbeing and regulation, communicate their needs in the workplace, and find support when needed.
Says LGU: “The ‘Burnout’ mental health series will feature conversations with mental health professionals, advocates for emotional safety in the workplace, and tourism professionals, examining what it takes to keep your business, career – and your wellbeing – afloat in this ever-evolving industry.”
Tickets for the first event on Oct. 11, are available here. More details are available from the event organizers at letsgetuncomfortableevent@gmail.com.
