Just a little to the right! Norwegian Epic crashes into moorings while docking

PUERTO RICO — We’d imagine parallel-parking a Winnebago would be a fairly difficult task. But maneuvering a 150,000-tonne mega cruise ship? That’d be downright impossible for most.

The captain of the Norwegian Epic proved earlier this week that even the most seasoned driver isn’t immune to the occasional fender-bender. While attempting to dock in Puerto Rico, the massive ship – which at the time was carrying 4,100 passengers – ended up loudly crashing into a couple of moorings.

The crash, from initial impact to the sad, somewhat startling sinking of said moorings, was all caught on video by a passenger on another cruise.

But don’t be so quick to cast blame on the captain – according to a Norwegian official, the crash was weather-related.

“Prevailing winds caused the ship to veer towards the pier, damaging two mooring points at Pier 3 East,” the official told the Miami Herald. “No injuries have been reported and guests are currently disembarking the ship as previously scheduled. We are working closely with local authorities to assess the damage.”

It’s been reported that the ship was experiencing engine troubles, and was making a pit stop in Puerto Rico while on a seven-day cruise of the Caribbean.
