Italian hotel association says visitors for Expo 2015 disappointing

MILAN — An Italian hotel association has expressed disappointment in the number of foreign visitors to Milan Expo 2015.

Federalberghi President Bernabo Bocca said Tuesday that the association projects 16 million Italians will have visited the world fair by the time it closes on Oct 31, declaring the numbers “a success for the internal market.” But he said the number of visitors from abroad failed to meet expectations, with hoteliers saying there has not been a significant presence of foreign guests arriving for Expo.

The world fair’s organizers had forecast 20 million visitors over the course of the six-month event, which Federalberghi said appears in range due to the Italian response. But half of Italian visitors have been day-trippers, meaning it wasn’t quite the boon to hoteliers as hoped.
