MADRID – Spain’s national weather agency says July was the country’s hottest month on record.

In statement Wednesday, the AEMET agency said the average temperature in Spain last month was 26.5 degrees Celsius (79.7 Fahrenheit). The agency said August 2003 had previously been the hottest month on record with an average temperature of 26.2 C (79.2 F).

Cordoba reported July’s highest temperature, reaching 45.2 degrees C (113.4 F) on July 6.

The southern city also holds the highest temperature on record in Spain – 46.6 C (115.9 F) on July 23, 1995. The southern city of Seville registered the same temperature three days later.
