Germany’s recovery from Canadian market stays strong, with lots of lift: GNTO

TORONTO — Germany’s post-pandemic recovery from the Canadian market continues in earnest, with an impressive 32.6% increase in Canadian overnight stays in 2023.

Not only that, but the recovery rate for overnight stays from 2023 to 2019 stands at 87.7%, says Anja Brokjans, Director, German National Tourist Office (represented in Canada by VoX International)

FOOSBALL ANYONE?

At a fun event yesterday at The Loft in Toronto’s Distillery District, attendees were invited to test their skills in a foosball tournament, in anticipation of Germany hosting UEFA Euro 2024 this summer.

Amidst the foosball games, Brokjans had more positive news to share on the tourism front.

Germany has become a top choice for Canadian travellers, securing the fourth spot in Europe after France, Italy and the UK, she said.

And Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich have emerged as the top three cities for Canadian travellers.

No international destination can thrive without lift, and Germany is doing well from the Canadian market with plenty of flight options.

“The number of flights from Canada to Germany has significantly increased and it’s now on the same level as 2019,” said Brokjans.

Lufthansa Group and Air Canada are offering up to 94 nonstop flights from Canada to Germany, with route connections including Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary to both Frankfurt and Munich.

And Condor is offering 20 nonstop seasonal flights per week, from Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, plus Toronto – Frankfurt is year round.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

What’s on the bucket list for Canadian travellers heading to Germany?

“When Canadians head to Europe, they’re all about soaking up the culture and the heritage, diving into the vibrant city life and taking it slow to enjoy the charms of slow travel,” says Brokjans.

She added that 85% of Canadians consider sustainability and climate action to be important factors when travelling to Germany.

Germany’s Green Cities initiative highlights 17 cities with over 80% green space, “reflecting our dedication to climate-friendly urban areas,” says Brokjans.

Plenty of information about sustainable travel can be found at Germany.travel, including accommodation options that combine sustainability with hospitality and comfort.

“As we strive for environmentally friendly tourism, Germany boasts more than 3,000 certified hotels and catering providers, placing a strong emphasis on sustainable management,” said Brokjans.

Germany’s commitment to sustainability is further highlighted with 58,000 e-charging stations for electric vehicles, catering to the preferences of Canadian families keen on exploring routes like the coastal route, and UNESCO family route, and venturing off the beaten path to discover palaces and castles, she added.

Germany also offers the Germany-Train-Ticket extended for €49 a month on public transport, providing an affordable and eco-friendly way to travel within the country. Germany boasts 33,300+ kilometres of rail in its system, and 5,700+ train stations.

Brokjans noted that both Canada and Germany demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability and addressing climate change. A study conducted by IPK International in September 2023 indicated that 85% of Canadians consider sustainability and climate action to be very important or important factors when travelling to Germany.

ARTS & CULTURE, UNESCO & MORE

In 2024, Germany beckons Canadians with a focus on Arts & Culture, UNESCO & Feel Good experiences.

With 52 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Germany takes the third spot globally, with the newest addition being the Jewish-Medieval Heritage of Erfurt.

Some 65% of Canadians say they choose Germany for travel based on cultural offerings. Germany is a theatre lover’s paradise with 500+ theatres scattered across the country. There’s also 6,700+ museums. Germany is also known for its fashion and lifestyle events and street art. Plus, of course, it’s a paradise for foodies and wine aficionados.

This year is set to be one of celebrations, from the 35th anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall in November, to UEFA Euro 2024 taking place June 14 – July 14 in 10 host cities including Berlin, Munich, Dortmund and more. There will be live public viewing zones in every town, creating a festive atmosphere with traditional German street food.
