“Creating happiness and community is one of our core values at G Adventures, and it’s the happiness side that has me buzzing right now”
I’ve spent the past couple of weeks reflecting on the year so far as we head into the first quarter of our new fiscal year here at G Adventures – and what a year it’s been so far! So much travel, so many laughs, so much connecting with new people and reconnecting with old friends. Taking trips, launching new trips, hosting events and planning ahead to our event of the year, GX, which is happening in India this September.
I talked about creating community recently, and this month I want to talk about creating happiness. Creating happiness and community is one of our core values at G Adventures, and it’s the happiness side that has me buzzing right now. In case you were curious, our other core values are “Lead with Service” “Do the Right Thing”, “Embrace the Bizarre”, and “We Love Changing People’s Lives”.
Being able to show up every day and create happiness in all we do here at G means the world to me. We create happiness for our travellers, for people in local communities, and in our place of work.
A couple of recent occasions where people’s happiness has been on full display for me were at one of our many G Adventures hosted Blue Jay games in Toronto. It has been so much fun and so energizing for me – a clear way to show that we can have fun, learn and collaborate away from the office!
I was also recently in Portugal – one of my favourite countries in the world – at the Flight Centre Global Gathering, along with over 3,000 travel agents and suppliers from all over the world. Seeing everyone celebrate their top achievements, seeing communities from different parts of the world come together, and having fun with other suppliers (and yes, even competitors!) reminded me of how we are more the same than different when it comes to having fun and creating and sharing happiness.
Having fun at work is really the key to happiness. We spend so much time at work, that when we radiate happiness around us, it becomes infectious. This month at G Adventures, we’ve been celebrating our community within, sharing stories about how others have supported each other. That, to me, is just another way to spread happiness and joy. When was the last time you thanked someone for a job well done, or even just said thanks for being themselves?
Have you recently asked yourself what makes you happiest? Happiness does come from within, and how you show up every day to ensure you express your happiness to others is so important. We work in an industry that makes people’s dreams come true, and for that I feel very blessed.
It’s not just about work either. We need to find happiness outside of our jobs as well, in order to bring inspiration from other sources and develop creative ideas and solutions. Some of my favourite ways to do this are via sports and the arts. Please ensure you are doing the same!
Until next time!
Peace,
DG
