Postcard-perfect St. Maarten wows advisors on recent fam

PHILIPSBURG — Hiking in rainforest-like landscapes, relaxing on sugary sun-dappled beaches, enjoying vibrant nightlife and sampling a unique and diverse array of cuisines.

These are just a few good reasons to visit the ‘Friendly Island’ of St. Maarten, as a group of Canadian travel advisors recently discovered during an exclusive fam co-hosted by the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau and Travelweek last month.

For most, it was their first visit to the island, and all were thrilled to explore its distinct character as the smallest landmass divided by two nations – the Netherlands and France – spanning just 88 square kilometres.

But while this tiny island may lack in size, it punches way above its weight in beauty and diversity.

“This is not your typical Caribbean island,” remarked David Herson, an advisor with TPI in Toronto.

“From breathtaking scenic views to nature and hiking, St Maarten offers much more than beautiful beaches. I highly recommend eating off-property; there’s a fabulous culinary scene on the island that deserves to be explored.”

After all, with over 100 nationalities residing on the island, it’s no surprise that St. Maarten is known as the Caribbean culinary capital. Each dining experience was part and parcel of our delightful culinary journey enjoyed throughout the week, featuring local must-tries like Guavaberry rum and warm Johnny cakes – though not typically enjoyed together!

Sarah Hassett from Marlin Travel Brantford suggests “eating local and exploring spots off the beaten path, away from hotels and resorts.” She also recommends the Grand Case area, on the French side, “as a foodie’s paradise,” where you’ll find some of the best food options on the island.

Travel pros should know that the island’s local eateries run the gamut from casual local fare, such as Jimmy’s BBQ, where you can enjoy your meal roadside at an outdoor picnic table, to more upscale dining experiences with white-cloth service at establishments like Moulin Fou, a French fine dining restaurant that hosted our group’s farewell dinner.

Rounding up some other exciting highlights from our week included …

  1. Ziplining at Rainforest Adventures, featuring the Flying Dutchman, with the steepest zipline in the world.
  2. Coastal hiking and discovering pristine secluded beaches led by Seagrape Tours.
  3. A fun session in Johnny cake making hosted by TJ’s Cassava Coal Pot Restaurant.
  4. A thrilling catamaran excursion onboard the Renegade Luxury Catamaran.
  5. Watching planes fly overhead at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, appearing close enough to touch.

These activities showcased the island’s diverse experiences and additional attractions, earning an enthusiastic two thumbs up from all the fam participants.

CHANNELING OUR INNER ATHLETES

If 2024 was the year for sports fans to travel, then 2025 is shaping up to be the year for wannabe athletes, with predictions indicating that athletic adventures will be one of the biggest travel trends this year.

Embracing the active and wellness trend movement, our group participated in one of the many races available on St. Maarten.

The St. Maarten Road Runners, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of the Sint Maarten community, hosted the race event on Dec. 8.

Now completing its third year, the race offers distances from 5km to a full marathon and is open to walkers, beginners and advanced runners alike.

The event also encourages visitors to participate and stay active while on vacation.

According to race board member Marcel De Wit, the event has grown yearly, with “the unique location and the fantastic views at the finish – overlooking the ports and cruise ships – make the race much more compelling.”

TRAVEL ADVISORS STEP UP

Another aspect of our fam was our opportunity to shine, give back and make a difference through a local community project, the New Start Children Foundation (NSCF).

The foundation, run by the remarkable Miss Sally, has provided a home and care for children in need, from newborns all the way up to age 18, for more than 11 years.

Our team came together, bringing six suitcases filled with much-needed supplies, along with a monetary donation. The visit was touching and heartfelt for everyone involved.

Hassett emphasized the importance of the community give-back project: “Finding a way to give back to a community was such a heartwarming experience. Knowing that I could play a small part in bringing joy to the children during tough times was incredibly humbling.”

Hershon also shared his thoughts: “Giving back during the holiday season was important. It was so nice to have the opportunity to visit Miss Sally’s home, engage with the children and put smiles on their faces.”

AIR CANADA UPDATE

Air Canada has enhanced its winter season service to reach St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport, making it easier to get to the island.

Flights currently operate five times weekly from Toronto, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, until March 2025.

There is also direct service from Montreal to St. Maarten, which operates weekly on Sundays.

A big thank you to our fam sponsors: Air Canada, hotel hosts Divi Little Bay Beach Resort and Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, and the St. Maarten Road Runners.

Also, a shout-out to Diana St. Hill from Next Divine Vacation, Toronto, for winning our social media contest. Well done, Diana!
