Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas begins sea trial

MIAMI — Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International’s first Oasis Class ship to offer short getaways, has begun testing at sea.

The five-day sea trial, considered one of the final construction milestones for new-build ships, began on May 7, just 10 weeks ahead of the ship’s homecoming party and official introduction in Port Canaveral (Orlando) in July 2024.

More than 900 experts and specialists across areas like naval architecture, engineering, navigation and design are involved in the ship’s construction and testing. The teams are carrying out hundreds of tests and inspections, from how the ship moves through the open water and the operation of its navigation systems, to engine performance, back-of-the-house technical checks and more. During the sea trial, Utopia of the Seas will cover more than 1,000 miles, after which it will be all systems go for the final phase of construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

Starting July 19, Utopia will embark on short getaways, becoming the first Oasis Class ship to debut with three-night weekend and four-night weekday cruises. Every voyage on Utopia will include a visit to Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, home to 14 waterslides, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, and the newly opened, adults-only Hideaway Beach featuring a private beach, pools, exclusive cabanas and live music.
