LONDON, UK — HX Expeditions is enhancing its fleet with major refurbishments for MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen, two of its most popular smaller ships.
With an investment of over €7 million, these upgrades will improve guest experiences, elevate onboard amenities, and increase operational efficiency.

Upgrades for MS Fram
MS Fram, named after the historic Norwegian exploration vessel, has been a favourite among expedition travellers for its advanced technology and immersive experiences. First purpose-built for polar exploration, the ship underwent a full upgrade in 2022 and is now set for additional enhancements.
Key upgrades include:
- New Science Centre: A state-of-the-art Science Centre will provide an interactive space for guests to engage with the expedition experience.

Science Center on MS Spitsbergen
- Cabin Renovations: Nineteen Arctic Superior cabins will be fully refurbished, including upgraded bathrooms. Fourteen Expedition Suites and six Expedition Grand Suites will also be modernized, offering a new twin-bed configuration option.

Arctic Superior Room on MS Fram
- Dining Enhancements: Aune Restaurant, known for its global cuisine, will see improvements to elevate the dining experience. The galley will also be upgraded for better operational efficiency.
- Additional Upgrades: All Polar Cabins will receive new bathrooms, and 36 crew cabins will be refurbished, including fresh carpets and sofas.
The refurbishment work will take place in Panama this April, with the upgraded MS Fram resuming service on May 26, 2025.
Enhancements for MS Spitsbergen
Named after the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, MS Spitsbergen has a deep connection to HX Expeditions’ origins. Its first expedition cruise in 1896 helped shape the future of modern adventure travel.
With a guest capacity of 220, MS Spitsbergen continues to be a key vessel in HX Expeditions’ Arctic itineraries. The upcoming upgrades will enhance guest comfort, accessibility, and operational efficiency.
Key enhancements include:
- New Science Centre: A brand-new Science Centre will further enrich the ship’s expedition offerings.
- Cabin and Public Space Updates: All Polar Cabins will receive upgraded bathrooms, while the Explorer Bar will be refreshed for an improved guest experience.
- New Brygge Bistro: A new bistro concept will offer guests a selection of snacks throughout the day.
- Accessibility and Crew Enhancements: Refurbished ADA bathrooms will improve accessibility, and new interpreter setups will allow guests to listen to scientific and educational talks in multiple languages. Crew areas and dining facilities will also be expanded.
The refurbishment will take place in Astilleros de Santander S.A.U. dry dock in Spain during February and March, with the ship returning to service on April 2, 2025.
