It’s always good to end the year on a high note, and that was certainly the case when this story ran – even if the positive news came with a caveat.
The headline for this edition of ‘It Happened This Week’ is: ‘Higher prices loom as loads, occupancy rates see double digit growth for airlines, hotels’
As Travelweek noted, load factors for the world’s airlines were averaging 82.5%, buoyed by a 12.4% uptick in North American air traffic.
The caveat? Higher demand without added supply equals higher prices: “With airlines still watching capacity closely, packed planes look to be the norm in the new year with higher airfares a likely result.”
Travelweek noted that on the hotel side, things were trending up too. The occupancy rate for the Americas region was up 6.7% to 61.3%. Average daily rate (ADR) was up too, by 1.5% to US$102.38, according to data compiled by STR and STR Global.
Did the headline appear in Travelweek in 2010, 2017 or 2021?
Here’s a hint: When this story ran, the ‘Great Recession’ was less than two years in the rearview mirror.
