Chicago O’Hare airport plans include more gates, amenities

CHICAGO — The city of Chicago is planning a multi-billion-dollar effort to expand the city’s O’Hare International Airport that includes more gates, larger terminals and upgraded amenities.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the latest modernization plans Friday. The project includes up to nine more gates in the airport’s international terminal, which hasn’t been expanded since it opened 23 years ago. The mayor says taxpayers won’t fund the projects. The planning process is expected to be finished next year.

According to Airports Council International, O’Hare was the fourth busiest airport in the world last year based on passenger traffic.

In January, Emanuel announced a $1.3 billion deal with two airlines to build a new runway. Last month, O’Hare received $45 million in federal grants for runway construction and a taxiway system.
