Nicaragua, Central America

Canada is a crucial market for Nicaragua tourism, and here’s why

TORONTO — There’s a lot of buzz about tourism to Nicaragua these days, not just for adventure travel but also for wellness, gastronomy and more.

With that in mind, the Visit Nicaragua team stopped by Toronto to meet with travel advisors and industry partners and share product updates for 2025.

“Nicaragua has become the ultimate destination in Central America for those looking to experience natural beauty,” said Ana Carolina García, Director of Promotion and International Marketing at Visit Nicaragua.

She added: “Canada is a crucial market for Nicaragua. As the second-largest international market after the U.S., Canadian travellers play a crucial role in the region’s tourism and cultural vibrancy.”

In 2023 Nicaragua welcomed 18,000 Canadians. “In 2024, so far we have welcomed 21,000 Canadians, which represents an increase of 12%. We have high expectations for 2025, and travel advisors continue to be pivotal in guiding travellers to Nicaragua,” said García Tijerino.

At an intimate lunch event at the Hazelton Hotel, García Tijerino walked attendees through Nicaragua’s latest products.

There were presentations, networking opportunities, highlights about new luxury properties and more.

During the event, Visit Nicaragua unveiled new partnerships with Goway and TourRadar.

García Tijerino said both companies will assist in promoting travel to the region through organized tour packages.

“These new collaborations will simplify travel for those seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences,” she said.

In addition to Nicaragua’s adventure travel offering, moving forward there will be a greater emphasis on sustainable / green tourism, agritourism, cultural and farm-to-table gastronomic experiences.

Highlights from the presentation included …

Community-Based Tourism

Nicaragua’s tourism industry is increasingly embracing community-based tourism, where local communities are actively involved in the development and management of tourism activities. This approach ensures that the benefits of tourism are shared with the local population and preserves the cultural heritage of Nicaragua.

Sustainable Farming and Agritourism

Many Nicaraguan farms and agricultural communities have embraced sustainable farming practices, such as organic cultivation, crop rotation, and reduced chemical usage. Visitors can participate in agritourism activities, learning about traditional farming methods and the importance of sustainable agriculture in Nicaragua.

12 new Tourism Routes

In order to promote the various regions of the country and taking advantage of its potential, attractions and main socio economic activities, the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism created 12 new ‘Tourism Routes’, highlighting each territory, attractions, natural and cultural resources.
