2. Kayaking on the Colorado River

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas or are looking for a tranquil day in the great outdoors you can take the day to experience ‘glass kayaks’ – yes, you read that right – on the Colorado River. These excursions, offered by family-run Vegas Glass Kayaks, offer guided day-long excursions along the Colorado River. Tours start and end at Willow Beach below Hoover Dam, about 45 minutes from Las Vegas and just past Boulder City. A shuttle bus operated by Vegas Glass Kayaks picks you up at your hotel at approximately 8 a.m. A bonus on the ride is a running commentary by the driver of the area’s natural landmarks and history.

Upon arrival at Willow Breach and after a short demonstration on how to operate your kayak, the guide leads the group (typically four to eight kayaks) up the river. The excursion is about 10 kilometres roundtrip to the Emerald Cave and is on a very calm part of the Colorado River – meaning no rapids – that winds through the Black Canyon.

There is one stop to visit historical ruins and a second stop for a relaxing and scenic picnic lunch on shore. Ducks swim along with the kayakers and wild mountain goats can be seen along the shores. The day ends at around 4 p.m., leaving enough time to relax a bit more and to return to Las Vegas for supper and some nightlife.
