Americans are drinking all of Cuba’s beer

HAVANA — Ever since U.S. travel restrictions to Cuba have been eased by President Barack Obama, Americans have started travelling to the island nation in droves. According to the Daily Mail, the increase of sun-starved – and, consequently, thirsty – American tourists are leading to a shortage of Cuba’s most popular brands of beer: Cristal and Bucanero.

To keep up with increased demand, Bucanero, the country’s main brewer, is considering opening a new plant, says The Independent, which reports that in 2015 3.5 million people visited Cuba, a 17% increase from 2014. While Americans represent only a small fraction of these visitors, they comprise a 77% increase overall, with hundreds more American tourists expected to take a cruise ship from Miami to Havana in May.

With beer flying off the shelves, it has been reported that breweries in Cuba ordered 33 million cases of beer this week. Bucanero has plans to import three million cases from Dominica.
