Lufthansa Group airlines, Virgin Atlantic latest to offer Apple AirTag location feature

TORONTO — More airlines are getting onboard with Apple AirTag’s location feature for baggage processes.

Lufthansa Group airlines – including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings – are integrating the Apple AirTag location feature into their baggage tracing, effective immediately.

Passengers can securely share AirTag data for faster and more transparent baggage solutions. The group’s airlines integrate this information into their systems accordingly and can therefore digitally support baggage tracking. The new feature is part of ongoing digital innovations by Lufthansa Group’s ‘Digital Hangar’.

“Thanks to our app and website, passengers can now find solutions quickly and easily in the event of irregularities,” said Oliver Schmitt, Head of the Lufthansa Group Digital Hangar. “In particular, we have been able to achieve significant improvements in the last few months in the area of baggage tracing. The integration of our customers’ AirTag data opens up additional possibilities for us to act even more efficiently and quickly.”

Virgin Atlantic has also announced that passengers can now use the new Share Item Location feature to privately and securely share the location of their AirTag or Find My network accessory with the airline’s customer teams.

Corneel Koster, Chief Customer and Operating Officer, Virgin Atlantic, said: “We know many people already use AirTags or a Find My network accessory to keep updated on the location of their luggage. On the rare occasion, when operational issues or misconnecting flights may require bags to be located, our teams now have this shared source of information, so our customers have peace of mind on our progress. Virgin Atlantic has amongst the best baggage performance in the industry and welcomes this innovation from Apple.”

Koster added that customers should verify that their Apple device is running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later, in order to experience the new Share Item Location feature.

Other carriers integrating the feature into their baggage processes include Air Canada, as announced in December 2024.
