CALGARY — WestJet is re-starting its nonstop service between Calgary and Mexico City, with five weekly flights beginning May 14, 2025.
Announcing the route yesterday at a news conference, WestJet said the return to MEX reaffirms its leadership as the top carrier connecting Canada and Mexico, while reinforcing Calgary’s position as a key hub for the airline’s global network.
“WestJet’s continued investment in popular sun destinations had made us the gateway between Canada and Mexico, bolstering both countries’ vital commercial and tourism economies,” said Daniel Fajardo, WestJet’s VP Network and Schedule Planning. “Service between Calgary and Mexico City opens the door for more Western Canadians to explore Mexico’s vibrant culture and history, while boosting trade and tourism across North America.”
WestJet last offered the route in 2018. With the addition of MEX, The WestJet Group, inclusive of WestJet and Sunwing Airlines, will serve 13 cities in Mexico from 24 Canadian cities in 2025. The group will continue to offer more nonstop routes between Canada and Mexico than any other Canadian operator, with more than 200 flights per week during peak travel periods.
In 2024, the WestJet Group flew an average of 46 flights per day between Canada and Mexico, carrying more than 2.6 million guests to and from the country.
Plus, the partnership between WestJet and Aeromexico, in place since 2011, opens even more of the country for WestJet passengers.
Mexico City is one of six new destinations for WestJet from YYC starting this spring.
“I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING TO GET EXCITED ABOUT”
Lesley Keyter, who runs Calgary’s South Travel Inc. – better known as The Travel Lady Agency – is welcoming WestJet’s new YYC-MEX flights.
“I think this is a fabulous opportunity for Calgarians and others to explore Mexico City,” Keyter told Travelweek.
She added that while Mexico City was once seen as risky due to high crime levels, “this seems to have changed and people are charmed by the city and all it offers.”
As she tells Travelweek: “It has great archeological sites as well as incredible architecture. It is a modern and vibrant city. I haven’t been there – yet – but I have friends who go there often and absolutely love it. Great street food and a real buzz. I think this is something to get excited about.”
