TORONTO — Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau will address a government committee about the airline’s recently-announced new carry-on fees.
According to a report from Reuters picked up in various news outlets, Rousseau will attend the meeting by videoconference, joining other airline executives.
As reported last week, Air Canada intends to make changes to its Basic and Comfort economy fares.
Starting Jan. 3, 2025, Air Canada passengers travelling on Basic fares will have to check any carry-on items larger than one small personal item (i.e. such as a purse or computer bag). These larger items (i.e. such as roller-board or duffel bags, or large backpacks) will have to be checked pre-security and standard fees of $35 for a first bag and $50 for a second bag will apply.
Passengers arriving at the boarding gate with ineligible carry-on items will be required to check this baggage for a $65 fee for each item. Mobility aids, medical devices, and child strollers are exempt.
Air Canada’s Comfort fares will include a second checked bag for travel worldwide.
Also new, seat assignment at check-in for Basic fares will remain complimentary, however as of Jan. 21, 2025 changes will incur a fee.
Air Canada said the changes “align the airline’s fare structure with similar fare offerings by other Canadian carriers and better distinguish its fare brands.”
The day after Air Canada made its announcement, news broke that Transport Minister Anita Anand requested a meeting with Canada’s airlines.
