“A paradise-like setting and a strong connection to sustainable tourism”: Why Iberostar chose Aruba

TORONTO — Iberostar Hotels & Resorts’ portfolio already includes properties in the biggest, most popular destinations in the Caribbean – like Jamaica, the D.R. and, of course, the Mexican Caribbean hotspots of Cancun, Riviera Maya and Cozumel (plus Cuba with Iberostar Cuba).

So when the Spain-based company announced its newest Caribbean pick, ears perked up. Which island would it be?

Turns out, Iberostar had its sights set on a much smaller but no less compelling gem: Aruba. The ‘A’ in the ABC island chain in the Leeward Antilles, Aruba is known for its landscapes dotted with cacti and Divi-Divi trees, great snorkelling, the pretty capital city of Oranjestad and its ‘One Happy Island’ branding.

When the news first dropped back in June 2024, Phil McAveety, CEO, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, called Aruba “a stunning destination that shares our passion for quality and commitment to a model of responsible tourism.”

McAveety added: “JOIA Aruba by Iberostar is a testament to our promise of providing guests with exceptional experiences. We are very pleased to expand Iberostar’s presence in the Americas, aiming to contribute positively within the local community with a shared sense of prosperity and commitment to sustainability.”

To find out more about the new resort, set to open mid-December 2024, Travelweek connected with Joao Tiago Pinho Abegao, Commercial Business Development Director – America for Iberostar Hotels & Resorts.

Travelweek: JOIA Aruba by Iberostar is the very first Iberostar resort on the island. What made Aruba such a compelling destination for Iberostar?

Abegao: “Aruba was chosen for its paradise-like setting and its strong connection to sustainable tourism, which are fundamental principles for Iberostar. Located on the renowned Eagle Beach, JOIA Aruba by Iberostar reflects the brand’s commitment to environmental conservation in one of the Caribbean’s most precious ecosystems. Aruba’s openness to sustainable tourism was a key factor in choosing it as a destination for brand expansion, allowing Iberostar to positively impact the local community and reinforce its mission of responsible tourism.”

Travelweek: What can you tell us about the property?

Abegao: “JOIA Aruba by Iberostar is a luxurious five-star resort with 240 suites, designed to make the most of the breathtaking views of Eagle Beach, one of Aruba’s most famous beaches. Among its exclusive amenities, the resort offers butler service, suites with pools or Jacuzzis on the balcony, a convention centre with over 10,000 square feet, a spacious spa, casino, Fit & Fun gym, and an award-winning

18-hole golf course. Dining options include three restaurants: a buffet and two themed restaurants specializing in Caribbean cuisine with an outdoor grill for meats and seafood, as well as a rooftop bar where guests can enjoy Aruba’s spectacular sunsets.”

Travelweek: How would you describe the JOIA brand and what other JOIA properties are in Iberostar’s portfolio?

Abegao: “The JOIA by Iberostar brand segment is Iberostar’s collection of luxury resorts, combining personalized service with unparalleled beachfront locations. JOIA resorts are crafted to provide a sophisticated and environmentally conscious experience, especially for adults and travellers seeking a more private experience. In addition to JOIA Aruba by Iberostar, the collection includes JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar, in the Dominican Republic, JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar, in Mexico, and JOIA Rose Hall by Iberostar, in Jamaica, all set on iconic, stunning beaches.”

Travelweek: For travel advisors looking to qualify clients, who would make a great fit for JOIA Aruba by Iberostar?

Abegao: “JOIA Aruba by Iberostar is ideal for sophisticated travellers who are focused on luxury experiences with a commitment to sustainability. Honeymooners, families seeking comfort and exclusivity, and groups celebrating special occasions are perfect matches for the resort. With its extensive array of amenities, the resort also appeals to travellers interested in relaxation, wellness and authentic, tranquil Caribbean experiences.”

Travelweek: What resources does Iberostar offer for travel advisors?

Abegao: “Iberostar provides a range of support tools for travel advisors, including our newly designed travel agent website IberostarAgents.com/ca, where you can stay up-to-date on our products with all the necessary resources. We also offer our ‘StarAgents’ (staragents.com) loyalty program, which launched in 2020. This platform allows travel advisors to earn points that can later be redeemed for

stays at Iberostar hotels. The new brand segmentation provides greater clarity in Iberostar’s offerings, making it easier to recommend products to clients with varying travel profiles.”
