For clients who have the Cayman Islands on their wish list but worry they may fall short on budget, the Sunshine Suites Grand Cayman Resort and its sister property, The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort and Spa may be the perfect solution. Vacationers can stay at Sunshine Suites and spend their days lounging and sipping libations at The Westin.
On a recent visit to the Cayman Islands I saw the new look of The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort and Spa. The first phase of the makeover which transformed the public spaces was completed in December 2016 and cost a whopping $50 million, but the final look was worth every dime. The lobby was transformed into a bright space with wood finishes, natural textures and pale blue hues that reflect the island’s laidback feel, while the pool area was re-designed into an outdoor oasis with a swim-up bar and stylish lounging nooks where you can sit back to take in views of one of the most spectacular beaches in the world.
The sprawling 343-room beachfront beauty is an island favourite with 60% repeat guests. On Friday nights the resort hosts its weekly BBQ on the beach; island breezes and a fiery sunset make for unforgettable evenings. The amenities are great, too. Enjoy an array of water sports or book a Vichy treatment at the 7,000-square-foot Hibiscus Spa while the children play at the walk-in Kid’s Club.
Oh, and did I mention the dining? Under the direction of Executive Chef, Sandy Tuason, who worked two years for Master Chef Jacques Sorci, dinner at the Beach House will remind you why the Cayman Islands are known as the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.
Phase two of the makeover, which is slated for unveiling in August, will tackle hallways and a new look and furnishings for all the guestrooms and suites. Rates at The Westin start at US$220. As part of the ‘Summer Only in Cayman’ promotion, the Westin is offering fifth nights free and a $100 resort credit per stay. The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort and Spa is also part of Starwood’s SPG loyalty program.
Sunshine Suites Grand Cayman Resort may provide humble accommodations compared to its sister property, but it’s not lacking. Rooms are spacious and come equipped with a full kitchen, perfect for that supermarket down the road. To make the deal sweeter they offer free WiFi and a complimentary continental breakfast. There is also a beautiful newly renovated pool with loungers (the same ones they have at The Westin), but undoubtedly the property’s best-kept secret is its poolside restaurant. Sunshine Grill is known to locals for having the best fish tacos on the island and nothing says vacation better than enjoying flavourful island dishes and a poolside cocktail.
The 131-room property is located directly across from the Westin and offers shuttle service to and from both properties, so guests of Sunshine Suites can enjoy all the above-mentioned amenities and beachfront access to Seven Mile Beach. Best of all, clients can bill any services or food and beverage charges incurred at The Westin to their room at Sunshine.
Daily rates start at US$169 for a small suite, plus the ‘Summer Only in Cayman’ promotion applies here as well, with fifth nights free. The resort also offers a meal plan at the Sunshine Grill.
Tour operators offering the properties include Air Canada Vacations and WestJet Vacations. For more hotel information, visit sunshinesuites.com and westingrandcayman.com.
