Dubai seeing “tremendous growth in visitation” from Canadian market

Strong bilateral relations, enhanced air connectivity and a diverse range of experiences appealing to families, couples, solo and business travellers are fuelling an uptick in Canadian visitation to Dubai, as Hoor Al Khaja, Senior Vice President – International Operations at the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism tells Travelweek in this edition of Take 5.

  1. Can you share some statistics highlighting Canada’s performance to Dubai?

“Dubai welcomed a record 14.96 million international visitors from January to October 2024, reflecting a 7.63% increase compared to the previous year, according to the latest data published by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Arrivals from the Americas, including Canada, represented 7% of this total, accounting for approximately 986,000 visitors.

“We continue to see incremental growth from Canada with a 19% YoY increase in visitation from January to September 2024. This tremendous growth in visitation has been fueled by strong bilateral relations, enhanced air connectivity and a diverse range of experiences appealing to families, couples, solo and business travellers. Notably, Dubai is also home to a vibrant Canadian expat community, further reinforcing cultural and economic ties between the two regions.”

  1. What are your biggest established markets / demographics from Canada, and what new travel trends are you seeing from Canada?

“We are observing significant growth among younger demographics, particularly couples, millennials, solo travellers and digital nomads from the Canadian market. These groups are driving demand for a diverse range of accommodation options, from all-inclusive resorts with comprehensive amenities to lifestyle properties that offer personalized touches and local charm. Meanwhile, next-gen professionals are looking for modern and social-post worthy experiences, emphasizing the need for reliable connectivity to support their digitally driven lifestyles.

“Market analysis also shows a growing interest in cultural tourism among Canadians, who are increasingly attracted to Dubai’s historical neighborhoods and vibrant art scene, including highlights like Alserkal Avenue. Adventure tourism has always been a major attraction and Canadians are excited to embark on desert safaris, enjoy water sports at coastal hotspots such as Kite Beach and Nikki Beach, and even try skydiving over Palm Jumeirah.”

  1. What can you tell us about flights to Dubai from Canada, now and for the months ahead?

“Emirates and Air Canada provide a robust network of year-round direct flight options from major cities like Toronto and Montreal. Emirates provides daily direct flights from Toronto and Montreal, while Air Canada offers nonstop daily routes from Toronto, ensuring convenient travel access. Additionally, travellers from feeder cities like Calgary, Ottawa and Halifax can find their connections to Toronto and Montreal for their onward journey to Dubai through Air Canada’s, WestJet’s and Porter Airlines’ comprehensive domestic network.

“As we move into winter, we anticipate increased demand driven by Dubai’s peak tourism season. Airlines typically respond by boosting flight frequencies to accommodate holiday travellers and warm-weather seekers, with Air Canada resuming its seasonal direct flights from Vancouver until end of March.

“With its status as a global aviation hub, Dubai also continues to be an attractive stopover destination, providing travelers with the opportunity to split up their travel and enjoy Dubai’s unique offerings before continuing with their journeys.”

  1. Dubai is on so many travellers’ bucket lists. What are 5 must-dos for the first-time visitor?

“Dubai’s diverse range of attractions reflects its dynamic spirit, offering a unique blend of heritage, adventure and modern luxury. For first-time visitors, embarking on a ride on a traditional wooden abra boat across Dubai Creek provides an enriching experience. Deira Creekside reflects the heart of the city, showcasing Dubai’s heritage as a historic port. Visitors can explore the vibrant Spice Souk, Perfume Souk and the Gold Souk, where they can engage in the traditional art of bargaining for local artisan goods.

“Similarly, a visit to the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) deepens understanding of local customs and culture. Since 1998, SMCCU has facilitated a profound appreciation of Dubai’s culture through guided heritage tours, mosque visits, and hosted meals on Bedouin-style carpets and pillows, illuminating traditions and local life in the emirate.

“On the outskirts of the city, Dubai’s natural landscapes – from the enchanting Arabian desert to Hatta’s mountain enclave – merits inclusion on any itinerary. Leading Dubai-based eco-tourism operator Platinum Heritage offers wildlife safaris within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve in restored series I & II Land Rovers, as well as activities like authentic Emirati cultural performances, stargazing, and hot air balloon rides. Just as captivating, and only a 90-minute drive from the heart of the city, the Hatta region boasts the breathtaking Hajar Mountains and protected wildlife areas, offering hikes along 52 kilometres of trails, ziplining, and kayaking. Recent sustainable tourism initiatives have transformed the region into a vibrant cultural and adventure hub, complete with a revamped transportation system and exciting attractions like the Hatta Wadi Hub.

“For families, Dubai Parks and Resorts delivers hassle-free planning and all-day fun, offering three theme parks including the new Real Madrid World, the world’s first soccer theme park, one waterpark and one indoor play world. Visitors can enjoy more than 100 fun-packed rides and two kilometres of rollercoaster rides. This diverse array of attractions caters to all ages and underscores Dubai’s reputation as the world’s number one choice for families, having been recognized in Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards for three consecutive years.

“Dubai’s breathtaking 50 km coastline along the Gulf also features world-class beach clubs and luxury resorts. The pristine white-sand beaches and azure waters make Jumeirah Beach a sought-after destination for sun-seekers, highlighted by the iconic sail-shaped resort – Jumeirah Burj Al Arab. This illustrious resort offers Michelin-starred dining and an exclusive 10,000-square-meter terrace, providing plush surroundings for enjoying the infinity saltwater pool or socializing at the SAL Beach Club.

“Finally, a noteworthy mention would be visiting the world’s tallest building – the iconic Burj Khalifa. Whether ascending to one of the viewing platforms – going as high as the 154th floor – or marveling at it from ground level at the Dubai Fountain, next to Dubai Mall and coupled with the outstanding light and sound show, it should be considered as a must-do for any first-time visitor.”
