Sometimes we enjoy the independence of being on our own: fewer distractions, calling the shots as to when our workday starts … and ends. But keeping focused can be a whole new ballgame when you are working from home, as so many of you do. So here are a few ideas to help you keep that focus laser sharp:
- I know I say it all the time, but a To Do list is probably the most important thing you do each day. Update it each evening before you ‘close up shop’ for the day to re-sort your priorities, and add/delete as required. You’ll start every workday fresh.
- Your Outlook calendar is a wonderful, powerful tool. As soon as you set a date, register for a webinar or set up a client meeting, put it in your calendar. Add your personal commitments and you have your life at a glance, whether it’s by month or by week. You cannot get side swiped by a missed meeting if your system gives you an alert.
- Set aside time to market yourself. Post something on Facebook or send an interesting tweet, create a flyer (many suppliers have free templates) and make a few cold calls.
- Make a point of stretching yourself. Listen to a TED Talk, take a class on Excel or read a business book. Learn something new every single week.
- And, finally, say thank you to five people every week. Colleagues, suppliers and clients all appreciate that message. Do it verbally, in an e-mail, or for surprising impact, snail mail. You know how thrilled you are when someone takes the time to thank you. Why not turn the tables? You’ll do a lot towards making yourself memorable.
