[Moab, UT] – Dead Horse Point State Park in Moab, Utah, will host regular “star party” programs during the spring and fall seasons: a chance to see some one of the darkest and most beautiful night skies in the world. Ranger-led programming offers guests expert-led insights into the natural and cultural aspects of the park.
The star party programs are led by state park rangers, who will lead guests on a “constellation tour” of the night sky, pointing out constellations and telling their stories. Rangers will also dive into the mystery of deep space objects, such as black holes, and guests will have the chance to peer through telescopes to see a magnified view of nearby planets.
Dead Horse Point State Park has been an internationally recognized Dark Sky Park since 2016, meaning it is one of the most accessible areas to stargaze in the Moab area—and one of the most spectacular places to do so in the entire world.
“Its high plateau location, mountains far in the distance, and cities out of sight yield a nearly full view of the celestial sphere,” according to the park.
While star parties take place around the new moon, to allow for better star viewing, the park also hosts “full moon hikes,” where visitors can hike underneath only the light of the full moon. There are a number of hiking trails within the park that overlook deep canyons carved by the Colorado River.
Park rangers also host “sunset talk” programs, where guests can learn about the spectacular geology that formed the Moab area—while watching a miraculous sunset over that geology!
