Valentine’s Day finally arrived and the overly-hyped 50 Shades of Grey hit the cinemas. Not surprisingly, the reviews were terrible, garnering a measly score of 26% on the movie review site RottenTomatoes.com. So I feel vindicated that when I was in New York City for the weekend, I decided to see the Off-Broadway parody instead.
50 Shades! The Musical is a hilarious take on the infamous book. The show starts with three women deciding that 50 Shades of Grey will be the new pick for their book club. From there we see the story develop, featuring cutesy-virgin Anastasia and soon-to-be dominator, Christian Grey.
The show jumps between catchy music numbers, funny commentary from the ladies in the book club and well-timed pauses emphasizing the absurdity of the story. As someone who didn’t read the book or see the movie, I recommend catching the show for a fun night.
If you or your client is planning a trip to New York City, 50 Shades! The Musical is included in NYC & Company’s bi-annual ‘Off-Broadway Week’ promotion, offering two-for-one tickets to some 40 Off-Broadway productions from Feb. 23 to March 8.
