TORONTO — Reports indicate that the Canada – U.S. border could remain closed for at least another 30 days.

Consumer media outlet CTV News is reporting that sources say the closure will be in effect for another month or more.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he could be in favour of opening the border sooner rather than later, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada’s position is that the agreement to close the border should be extended.

Freeland said that regardless of what President Trump says about wanting to re-open the border, decisions about opening Canada’s side will be made by Canadians only.

Freeland has also indicated that there are discussions underway between premiers about inter-provincial travel restrictions.

The Canada-U.S. border shut down for non-essential travellers between March 20 and March 21.
