TORONTO — Despite the fact that Canada is a relatively new market for Los Cabos, it’s a rapidly growing one, with an 18% increase in arrivals so far in 2019, mostly from Western Canada.
This Canadian push has helped position the city as Mexico’s fastest growing destination, welcoming three million tourists each year. Tourism last year grew 15% over the previous year – 1.5 times the overall growth rate of Mexico – thanks in large part to a US$1 billion investment in hotel development that has resulted in an additional 6,000 rooms over the past seven years.
Another $50 million went into building a brand new airport terminal for international arrivals. And now with Swoop launching 3x/weekly service from Edmonton and 2x/weekly service from Winnipeg starting Nov. 2 and Nov. 17, respectively, this ultra-luxe destination can expect to see even greater numbers in the future.
At an industry luncheon in Toronto yesterday hosted by the Los Cabos Tourism Board, Monica Garcia, Vice President of Jesson + Company, which represents the Board in Canada, called Los Cabos the most high-end destination in Mexico. And although the Mexico Tourism Board has shuttered its offices around the world, tourism in Los Cabos remains in good shape thanks to a new independent fund.
“Los Cabos and the tourism administration has been a pioneer in creating this new fund, which will come from the hoteliers and stakeholders in the destination,” said Garcia. “This money will be reinvested to supply what is now no longer being invested by the federal government.”
A new marketing campaign, ’10 Experiences’, was launched earlier this year to highlight the destination’s unique offerings. These include ‘Amazing Tenors’, a dolphin experience followed by dinner, a glamping and mountain biking experience, and a tour of San José, home to art galleries and an array of high-end restaurants.
Several new hotels are expected to open in the remainder of the year, including Vidanta East Cape (844 rooms), Four Seasons Resort (145 rooms), and Grand Solmar Rancho San Lucas (40 rooms). In 2020, Los Cabos will welcome highly anticipated properties from names such as Park Hyatt, Aman, Cesar’s Place and St. Regis.
All of these openings will join an already stacked lineup of luxury resorts, approximately a third of which are all-inclusive, said Garcia. One such property is the new five-star Le Blanc Spa Resort, which opened in 2018 under the Palace Resorts umbrella. And although Le Blanc sees plenty of competition from other high-end hotels, Cessie Cerrato, Senior Director of Public Relations for Palace Resorts, said all-inclusives in Los Cabos are stepping up their game.
“Every room at our resort has an ocean view, and every guest at our resort has butler service,” she said at yesterday’s luncheon. “Plus, being an all-inclusive makes us more accessible to guests, who don’t have to pay out-of-pocket for every little thing.”
