This Oscar winner is Scenic Eclipse’s new godmother

BOSTON — An Oscar winner has been named the godmother of Scenic’s highly anticipated new ship, Scenic Eclipse.

Dame Helen Mirren, who won the Best Actress Academy Award in 2007 for her title role in ‘The Queen’, has been given the honour to christen the ship at its christening ceremony in New York City on Sept. 10. Prior to that, Scenic Eclipse will embark on its maiden voyage on Aug. 15 from Reykjavik on a 13-day discovery sailing that will end in Quebec on Aug. 27.

On her new role, Mirren said: “I am very honoured to have been chosen as the Godmother to such a beautiful vessel as Scenic Eclipse. She will have many adventures and a wonderful life as she transports her guests in immaculate style and great safety to beautiful places.”

Glen Moroney, founder and chairman of Scenic, added: “We are delighted to welcome Dame Helen Mirren as Scenic Eclipse godmother. Her style, beauty and spirit of adventure are true to those embodied in the design and ethos of Scenic Eclipse. Combined with the international acclaim as one of the world’s finest actresses, Dame Helen Mirren makes the perfect godmother to preside over the ship.”

The 228-guest Scenic Eclipse encountered several delays leading up to its launch this year due to construction issues and labour strikes at Uljanik Shipyard. However, following new ownership of Uljanik, the ship will finally debut a full year after its original launch date.

Upon its debut, it will offer 114 all-verandah suites ranging in size from 345-2,659 square feet, plus 10 dining options, a spa with a gym and separate yoga and Pilates studio, two six-guest helicopters, and one six-guest submarine capable of depths of nearly 1,000 feet. There’ll also be a state-of-the-art theatre, indoor and outdoor plunge pools, butler service for all guests and an almost 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio.
