TORONTO — The Inca Trail has been named a United Nation’s World Heritage Site at the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) last week.
The nomination of the Inca Trail was submitted jointly with Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú and was an initiative of the Peruvian Government.
Peru has a total of 12 World Heritage Sites. The other 11 are: the city of Cusco; the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu; the Archeology site of Chavin; the National Park of Huascaran; the Archeology Zone of Chan Chan; the National Park of Manu; the Historic Center of Lima; the National Park Rio Abiseo; the Lines of Nasca and the Jumana Hills; the Historic Center of Arequipa and the Sacred City of Caral-supe.
The great Inca Trail, best known as ‘Qhapaq Nan’, was a very important way of transportation during the pre-Hispanic era in Peru. These ancient roads are 25,000 kilometres in length.
Qhapaq Nan is still the road of adventure for thousands of visitors each year to hundreds of archeological sites in Peru, such as Machu Picchu; one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
