SHANGHAI — Skyscrapers are a dime a dozen these days, with an 18-storey building hardly raising an eyebrow. But what about one that’s 18 stories below ground? Now, that’s something to talk about.
Scheduled to open Dec. 1 is the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, the world’s very first underground hotel. The first-of-its-kind luxury resort has been built 300 feet into a former quarry, just 20 miles from Shanghai. It has 18 floors in total, 16 of which are below ground.
Other cool features? A majestic waterfall that plunges into the quarry below, plus a ground level that’s covered in greenery to blend into the surrounding landscape.
The bottom two floors double as a balcony, and even cooler than that is the fact that its two lowest levels are completely submerged in water in a 33-foot-deep aquarium!
