A village in China has built a towering 120-foot gold statue of Mao Zedong to honour the infamous Communist leader chairman four decades after his death.

According to Mashable, the statue has been erected in Tongxu county, near the city of Kaifeng in Henan province, and appears to still be under construction. Built from steel beams and concrete, it’s been painted an alarming gold colour, a stark contrast to the muted earth tones of the surrounding countryside.

Local Chinese news outlet Sina reports that the statue has cost locals approximately three million yuan (approximately US$460,000) to build. It has been under construction for nine months.

Mao was the founding father of modern-day Communist China, which he governed as Chairman of the Communist Part of China from 1949 until his death in 1976.
