QUEBEC — A new trail for cyclists and pedestrians has been opened in Quebec City’s historic Battlefields Park.

About 1.2 kilometres long, the winding Plains of Abraham Trail will be groomed in winter and lit year-round, said the National Battlefields Commission, which oversees the site.

The paved route, featuring observation points and historical interpretive panels, links Quebec City’s Upper Town and the Promenade Samuel-de-Champlain park along the St. Lawrence River.

Work on the $3.7-million project was completed in late November.

The trail represents the second phase of the Gilmour Hill redevelopment project announced in August 2013. The first phase involved improving roadways to allow for year-round use.

Skiing, snowboarding, skating and skateboarding are not allowed on the trail, which has a speed limit of 10 kilometres an hour to ensure the safety of users, the commission said.
