The tourism industry is worried about the negative implications of South Africa’s new visa rules, which are designed to prevent child trafficking.

Any child coming into South Africa will have to be in possession of a full, unabridged birth certificate. If a child is travelling with one parent, immigration will require written consent of the other parent, even if they are divorced. And travelling with a minor who is not a biological child requires a letter from both parents or guardians.

The travel industry has raised concerns about: added costs for inbound travellers; the translations of documents; repatriation costs falling on airlines; processing backlogs and the capacity of immigration and more.

South Africa’s tourism industry is already feeling the pinch of a decrease in tourism this year.
