As a travel advisor, it’s natural for you to start seeking clients within your personal network – family, friends, and acquaintances.
If you’re new to the industry, this can be a great way to spread the word about your services.
However, relying solely on your inner circle comes with challenges. You may encounter people who ask for advice but never book with you, or ones who don’t truly value your expertise. And, of course, you don’t want to create awkward situations with those closest to you.
I expect if you’ve experienced any of this – or not – you’ll want to expand your reach beyond your immediate network.
The key? Fish where the fish are. In other words, put yourself in places where you’re likely to meet people who love to travel, have the means to do so, and are open to working with a professional like you.
Where to Find New Clients …
- Engage in social media communities. Join and actively participate in groups where your travel knowledge is valuable (e.g., family groups, luxury lifestyle, golfers, wine lovers, you name it). Share insights, answer questions, and establish yourself as a go-to travel expert. But don’t push your services or ask for business: keep it all very friendly.
- Join a club or special interest group, be it sports, theatre, photography orcollecting something. Clubs provide a great way to build new relationships and introduce your services (and have fun doing your favourite thing!).
- Volunteer: Contributing to a cause not only helps your community but also connects you with people and other volunteers, who have both the time for and interest in travel.
- Get involved in the arts & culture scene. Many travellers are passionate about history, museums, music and the arts. By joining cultural organizations, you’ll meet people who appreciate unique travel experiences.
While networking within the travel industry is valuable, one of the best ways to grow your business is by being the only travel advisor in the room.
Networking outside of the industry, strategically positioning yourself where travellers naturally gather, increases your chance of finding quality leads – and ultimately, building a thriving travel business.
So … where will you cast your net?
