TORONTO — Both Air Canada and WestJet have issued travel advisories as Tropical Storm Sara skirts Central America on a path that could lead to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
The airlines have triggered their flexible booking policies, making it easier for travellers to change their travel plans ahead of the storm.
Tropical Storm Sara edged along northern Honduras’ Caribbean coast early this morning, dumping torrential rains across parts of Central America and southern Mexico after making an initial landfall overnight.
Sara hit land about 165 kilometres west-northwest of the Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Honduras-Nicaragua border, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
By dawn, the centre said the storm was located about 330 kilometres east-southeast of Belize City and was moving west at 15 kph, with maximum sustained winds of 80 kph.
The storm was expected to remain roughly on that path before heading out to sea again and threatening the coast of Belize.
FLEXIBLE CHANGES WITH AIR CANADA, WESTJET
Sara was forecast to pass over or very near the tourist destination of Roatan off Honduras’ coast on Sunday. The storm was then expected to turn northwesterly toward Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula.
Mexican authorities warned it could cause “intense rains” over the Yucatan Peninsula, home to Cancun, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen and many more top resort destinations.
Air Canada has posted travel advisories for both Tulum and Cancun, for travel Nov. 16 and Nov. 17, ahead of Tropical Storm Sara. More information about Air Canada’s revised ticketing policy for these destinations on these dates can be found here.
WestJet meanwhile has so far posted a travel advisory for flights to/from Belize City, for Nov. 16 and Nov. 17. For more details on WestJet click here.
