Curacao Marriott Beach Resort right in the heart of the action on this ‘ABC’ island

TORONTO — Known to many as a diver’s paradise, the island of Curacao is also home to Willemstad – one of the prettiest capital cities in the Caribbean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – plus an abundance of soft adventure options, lively Handelskade and Mambo Beach, serene Christoffel National Park and much more.

Right at the heart of the action on a stretch of beautiful beach in Piscadera Bay is Curacao Marriott Beach Resort, where the hotel’s GM, Gary Farstad, oversees operations.

The 336-room property has five dining options, ranging from Cspice to Zala Gastro Lounge to Izakaya Sushi Bar and more. There are also three bars, two pools, a kids’ club, meeting facilities, wedding packages … and the list goes on and on.

It’s a go-to resort on this ‘ABC’ island (it’s one of the three islands that comprise the Netherland Antilles, along with Aruba and Bonaire) for a wide range of demographics, including families, couples, groups, LGBTQ+ and more.

Travelweek connected with Farstad to find out more about Curacao Marriott Beach Resort, its target markets, sustainability initiatives and its offerings for non-divers.

Travelweek: Curacao Marriott Beach Resort sounds like the perfect fit for so many travellers, including all those adventurers looking to get off the beaten path. What markets are tried-and-true great fits for the resort, and what new markets are you encouraging?

Farstad: “The Dutch market was the dominant market in the past, but Curacao has seen remarkable growth out of the U.S. market, currently accounting for the majority of our travellers. The Brazilian market is increasing rapidly; some months, they account for almost 20% of our guests. We encourage fulfillment seekers who are optimists in pursuit of a meaningful life who are learning and experiencing all they can, sharing with those who matter to them and doing so confidently and with ease, to explore Curacao.”

Travelweek: Curacao is a nature lover’s paradise. That dovetails well with Curacao Marriott’s commitment to sustainability, and builds on your own experience working closely with Whitecap Dakota First Nation during the opening of Dakota Dunes Resort right here in Canada, just outside of Saskatoon. Can you tell us more?

Farstad: “Our artwork in our guest rooms is made by Limpi, a local company that recycles plastic into artwork and souvenirs. In front of the resort, you can see a coral farm where Goby Divers, our business partner, is growing elkhorn coral to send to other areas of the Caribbean that have lost their coral. We have converted to LED light motion sensors and have heat recovery for our air conditioning system that heats our water. We also donate our cooking oil to a local company that converts it into biodiesel. Additionally, all hotel water is being recycled by a third party and returned for irrigation of gardens and palm trees.”

Travelweek: Curaçao is a safe destination for solo and LGBTQ+ travellers, and the island aims to legalize same-sex marriage by the end of this year, which is great news. Is the LGBTQ+ market a strong one for Curacao Marriott, and is the property anticipating strong demand for same-sex wedding packages?

Farstad: “Yes, the LGBTQ+ market is one important source market for the resort. Most recently we hosted Carlos Adyan (host of NBCUniversal Telemundo’s show En Casa Con Telemundo) and his husband Carlos for their honeymoon. Since hosting Carlos and Carlos, we have seen a big spike in LGBTQ+ travel to our hotel. We are actively working on creating future packages for our LGBTQ+ travellers.”

Travelweek: Even travel advisors who have never been to Curacao no doubt know the island is famous for its diving. The island’s well-known dive operator, Goby Divers, has a team equipped to teach Padi, SSI and IANTD diving courses. That said, what’s your message for agents who think they don’t have clients for Curacao because it’s just for divers?

Farstad: “There’s no doubt that scuba diving in Curacao offers an unparalleled experience due to its vibrant marine life, crystal clear waters, and a diverse range of diving sites. However, Curacao is a colourful vacation destination – a vibrant island home to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, unique cultural experiences and events, and endless activities for families, friends and couples. Every element, from the scenic views to the upbeat spirit of the local community, is uniquely and authentically Curacao. Plus, Curacao is an island located outside the hurricane belt offering many fantastic experiences for any type of traveller.”
