Fall brings autumn leaves, pumpkins and – for the travel industry, with the exception of the pandemic years – a look ahead to the coming winter sun travel season.
The headline for this edition of ‘It Happened This Week’ is: ‘What will winter bring? Sunwing deal, Goldberg’s new tour operator shake things up’
The Sunwing deal was the Sunwing – Signature Vacations merger, announced in the days before this issue ran. When this story ran, Sunwing Travel Group’s revenues had grown from $30 million to $660 million in the space of five years. First Choice Canada, meanwhile, saw a $20 million loss in the first half of the financial year.
One anonymous tour operator source called the merger “interesting and predictable”. The other interesting development heading into the winter season was Robbie Goldberg’s new travel company. As Travelweek notes, at this point Goldberg had been consulting to the travel industry since two years prior when he sold Conquest Vacations, the company he founded 35 years earlier.
Did the headline appear in Travelweek Bulletin in 1993, 2009 or 2020?
