CONTEST: Was it 2010, 2017 or 2021? ‘Higher prices loom as loads, occupancy rates see double-digit growth for airlines, hotels’

CONTEST: Was it 1978, 1986 or 1996? ‘A&K buys share of Nordic Tours’

Abercrombie & Kent, with an impressive 60+ year history, had already been around for close to 25 years when this story broke.

The headline for this edition of ‘It Happened This Week’ is: ‘A&K buys share of Nordic Tours’

As the story notes, ‘up-market’ FIT specialist A&K had offices around the world. It was buying a share in Nordic Tours, headed up by a very familiar name in the Canadian travel industry: Michael Friisdahl.

Friisdahl’s later roles in the travel industry included President and CEO of Air Canada Leisure Group, and CEO of Thomas Cook North America. In 2015 Friisdahl left the travel industry to become President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), only to return to travel in 2022 as executive chairman of Signature Aviation.

When this story ran, Friisdahl told Travelweek that Nordic would continue to operate as a separate Canadian entity, and said the merger “makes a lot of sense, in that most destinations served by Abercrombie & Kent are also served by Nordic. Our buying power and service should be that much better.”

Did the headline appear in Travelweek in 1978, 1986 or 1996?
